“Tank Shot – I didn’t know this band before. So I was all the more excited when I got my hands on the album “Psycho Man”, which blasts fifteen punk rock songs out of the speakers in just under 47 minutes of playing time. Psycho Man” is already the second album of the band from Hanover and will certainly not be their last. Because the band knows how to write good, crisp songs that mainly oscillate between pop, rock and punk and convince not only with a good production but also with some catchy tunes. The band around singer Kirsten goes directly in the right direction with the opener “Return to Pain” and presents a catchy tune as an appetiser. But the main course still follows. The Tank Shots also convince me with the title track “Psycho Man” and the strong “Shelter”. Another strong track is the thoughtful “Still Missing”, which lets off the accelerator a bit and gives the album some diversity. A song after which many listeners will certainly press the repeat button. Also strong is “Prost”. Of course, a proper punk rock album should somehow also have a song about drinking and partying. Here it is. With “Happiness” the band closes a very balanced album. Many strong songs that make you want to listen and a release that you can listen to track by track, because it’s fun in one piece. The big banger song is still missing, but the album is a self-contained and strong release. If you like punk rock (with female vocals), then feel free to give this a listen. “Tank Shot – die Band kannte ich bisher noch nicht. Umso gespannter war ich dann als ich das Album „Psycho Man“ in die Hände bekam, dass in knapp 47 Minuten Spielzeit fünfzehn Punkrock Songs aus den Lautsprechern ballert. Der „Psycho Man“ ist das bereits zweite Album der Band aus Hannover und wird bestimmt auch nicht ihr letztes sein. Denn die Band weiß, wie man gute, knackige Songs schreibt, die hauptsächlich zwischen Pop, Rock und Punk pendeln und nicht nur durch eine gute Produktion, sondern auch durch einige Ohrwürmer überzeugen. Die Band um Sängerin Kirsten geht schon direkt mit dem Opener „Return to Pain“ in die richtige Richtung und präsentiert einen flotten Ohrwurm als Appetizer. Doch der Hauptgang folgt noch. Auch mit dem Titelsong „Psycho Man“ sowie dem starken „Shelter“ wissen mich die Tank Shots zu überzeugen. Ein weiterer starker Track ist das durchdachte „Still Missing“, das etwas vom Gaspedal geht und dem Album etwas Vielfalt verleiht. Ein Song nachdem sicher viele Hörer*innen die Repeat-Taste drücken werden. Auch stark ist „Prost“. Natürlich gehört auf ein ordentliche Punkrockscheibe dann doch irgendwie auch ein Song übers Trinken und Feiern. Hier ist er. Mit „Happiness“ beschließt die Band ein sehr ausgewogenes Album. Viele starke Songs, die Bock machen und eine Veröffentlichung, die man Track für Track durchhören kann, da sie am Stück Spaß macht. Der ganz große Oberknaller-Song fehlt noch, aber das Album ist eine in sich geschlossene und starke Veröffentlichung. Wenn man auf Punkrock (mit weiblichem Gesang) steht, dann darf man hier gerne mal reinhören. Es macht sicher Spaß.” (Tough Magazine)
“Back then, at the age of twelve in the Boy Scouts: A wooden table, a hand with spread fingers, a driving knife … Tack, tack, tack… aaaah! It’s probably one of the silliest games you can play that TANK SHOT from Hanover document on the cover of their album, but probably also one that was already practised in caves and huts in the early days of mankind. TANK SHOT have been active since 2016, and in September and October 2020, in the middle of the pandemic, they recorded their second album (the debut “First Strike” came in 2018), which the five-piece says offers “authentic punk rock from the streets with a catchy tune guarantee”. And indeed, it does. The super melodic, relaxed, unhectic vocals of frontwoman Kirsten are very good, and musically the sounds are more flattering than aggressive – that’s a certain contrast to the oldschool punk look of the band on the photos, which would have led us to expect RANCID or EXPLOITED. Baumi, Björn, Kirsten, Olli and Holm have been active with Y-FRONTS, RECHARGE, AUDIO KOLLAPS, GUTS’N’GLORY and others, but here they are united by the fun of powerful, driving, catchy midtempo songs that, pressed into blue vinyl, make me think of THE MUFF or THE JOYCE MCKINNEY EXPERIENCE. Rather unusual is the cover song, “Cold little heart” by Michael Kiwanuka – don’t tell me, but 129 million views on YouTube speak another language. I like the cover here better than the original … The lyrics are in English except for “Prost” – no slogans, rather reflection is the order of the day.” (Ox)
“Damals, mit zwölf bei den Pfadfindern: Ein Holztisch, eine Hand mit gespreizten Fingern, ein Fahrtenmesser … tack, tack, tack … aaaah! Es ist wohl eines der dämlichsten Spiele, das man treiben kann, das TANK SHOT aus Hannover auf dem Cover ihres Albums dokumentieren, aber wahrscheinlich auch eines, das schon in der Frühzeit der Menschheit in Höhlen und Hütten praktiziert wurde. Seit 2016 schon sind TANK SHOT aktiv, im September und Oktober 2020, mitten in der Pandemie also, wurde nun das zweite Album eingespielt (2018 kam das Debüt “First Strike”), von dem der Fünfer sagt, es biete “authentischen Punkrock von der Straße mit Ohrwurmgarantie”. Und in der Tat, das tut es. Sehr gut kommt schon mal der super melodiöse, entspannte, unhektische Gesang von Frontfrau Kirsten, und auch musikalisch sind eher schmeichelnde als aggressive Klänge angesagt – das ist so ein gewisser Gegensatz zum Oldschool-Punk-Look der Band auf den Fotos, der eher RANCID oder EXPLOITED hätte erwarten lassen. Baumi, Björn, Kirsten, Olli und Holm waren unter anderem schon bei Y-FRONTS, RECHARGE, AUDIO KOLLAPS, GUTS´N´GLORY und anderen aktiv, doch hier eint sie der Spaß an druckvollen, treibenden, eingängigen Midtemop-Songs, die mich, in blaues Vinyl gepresst, an THE MUFF oder auch THE JOYCE MCKINNEY EXPERIENCE denken lassen. Eher ungewöhnlich ist der Coversong, “Cold little heart” von Michael Kiwanuka – sage mir nichts, aber 129 Millionen Views bei YouTube sprechen eine andere Sprache. Mir gefällt das Cover hier besser als das Original … Getextet wird bis auf bei “Prost” auf Englisch – keine Parolen, eher Reflexion ist angesagt.” (Ox)
“With “Psycho Man”, Tank Shot present their second album on Laketown Records and this is even better than their predecessor. If you haven’t heard of the band yet, you can get my issue #4, in which the band talks and answers questions, and where the debut album is also reviewed. Björn Fischer, who might be known to some people through his book about Rock-O-Rama, is also part of it. So, maybe now I have drawn your attention to the band a bit more, because otherwise I fear that Tank Shot will get lost in the jumble of hyped bands. Admittedly, the big hit is not on the record, but it runs super and offers everything a punk rocker could wish for, from Ramones-inspired songs like “Psycho Man” to the classic punk rock sound of “Some Day” to the melodic catchy tune “Happiness”. With “Prost” there is also a song sung in German, but I have to say, as on the previous album, that the English language suits the singer and the band much better. I wonder if the work on Björn Fischer’s book has something to do with the fact that Alla from the 80s punk combo Stosstrupp could be won over for the backing vocals? I don’t know!” (Yelloi Press)
“Mit “Psycho Man” präsentieren Tank Shot ihr zweites Album auf Laketown Records und sie können zum Vorgänger noch mal ne Schippe drauf packen. Sollte jemand noch nix von der Band gehört haben, kann er sich ja gerne meine Ausgabe #4 zulegen, in der die Band Rede und Antwort steht, und auch das Debütalbum besprochen wird. Mit von der Partie ist auch ein gewisser Björn Fischer, der mittlerweile einigen ein Begriff durch sein Buch über Rock-O-Rama sein dürfte. So, jetzt habe ich vielleicht etwas eure Aufmerksamkeit auf die Band gelenkt, da ich sonst befürchte, dass Tank Shot im Wust an gehypten Bands untergehen wird. Zugegeben, der ganz große Hit ist nicht auf der Platte, aber sie läuft super durch und bietet von Ramones angehauchte Songs wie “Psycho Man” über den klassischen Punkrocksound wie “Some Day” bis zum melodischen Ohrwurm, “Happiness” sei mal hier genannt, alles was der Punkrocker sich wünscht. Mit “Prost” gibt es auch wieder ein deutsch gesungenes Lied, aber da muss ich, wie schon auf dem Vorgängeralbum, sagen, dass der Sängerin und der Band das Englishsprachige deutlich besser zu Gesicht steht. Ob die Arbeiten zu Björn Fischers Buch etwas damit zu tun haben, dass mal Alla von der 80er Punkcombo Stosstrupp für die Backing Vocals gewinnen konnte? Ich weiß es nicht!” (Yelloi Press)
“The Hanover punk rock five-piece consisting of Björn, Holm, OC, Baumi and singer Kirsten deliver their second album. There are 15 songs on the CD and lovers of the genre will really enjoy the new work. Great melodies, choruses and singalongs, rich sound – recorded by Gregor Hennig (Die Sterne, Stoppok, Bela B.). These songs are also sure to work well live. Most of the lyrics are in English, after all that is Kirsten’s mother tongue, but there are also two songs in German. “Gift” is even one of my favourites on the album and “Alibi” is also fully convincing. With their second album, the band easily steps it up a notch compared to their debut “First Strike” from 2018, and I thought that was already pretty great. The songwriting has turned out much more interesting, but without losing the raw punk rock spirit. Tolle Melodien, Refrains und Singalongs, satter Sound – aufgenommen wurde von Gregor Hennig (Die Sterne, Stoppok, Bela B.). Auch live werden diese Songs sicher bestens funktionieren. Die meisten der Texte sind auf englisch, immerhin ist das die Muttersprache von Kirsten, aber es gibt auch zwei deutschsprachige Songs zu hören. „Gift“ ist sogar einer meiner Favoriten auf dem Album und auch „Alibi“ kann voll überzeugen. Mit ihrem zweiten Album legt die Band ganz locker noch eine Schippe drauf im Vergleich zum Debüt „First Strike“ aus 2018, und das fand ich schon recht großartig. “Tank Shot, there was something, I really thought I reviewed them 10 years ago for Moloko Plus. That’s right, 3 years ago Crazy United released their first album First Strike. The band around singer Kirsten comes from Hanover and has its roots in bands like Combat 77, Annex 5, Guts’n Glory, Y-Fronts & Recharge and Co. The musical direction is the same, varied punk rock, sometimes harder, sometimes quieter, here a bit offbeat and there a bit rockier. Kirsten’s vocals sound a bit softer than before, in my opinion, but still a nice rough snotty voice. Songs like “Psycho Man” or “Still Missing” could easily be found on a Ramones album. The quieter song “Cold Little Heart” is very cool. Only the two German songs “Gift” and “Prost” could have been left out, English suits Tank Shot much better. Then rather two songs like “Some Day”, “Fun” or “Still Missing”. Beautiful melodic female fronted punk rock with great melodies and many ooooohs and aaaaahs.” (Crazy United)
“Tank Shot, da war doch was, dachte echt ich hab die vor 10 Jahren fürs Moloko Plus besprochen. Richtig ist, vor 3 Jahren für Crazy United bereits das erste Album First Strike. Die Band um Sängerin Kirsten kommt aus Hannover und haben ihre Wurzeln in Bands wie Combat 77, Annex 5, Guts’n Glory, Y-Fronts & Recharge und Co. So auch die musikalische Ausrichtung, abwechslungsreicher Punkrock mal härter, mal ruhiger, hier etwas Offbeat und da etwas rockiger. Der Gesang von Kirsten klingt meiner Meinung etwas softer als früher, aber immer noch eine schöne raue rotzig Stimme. Songs wie „Psycho Man” oder „Still Missing” könnte man musikalisch problemlos auch auf einem Ramones Album finden. Sehr cool ist der ruhigere Song „Cold Little Heart” geworden. Einzig die beiden deutschen Song „Gift” und „Prost” hätte man sich sparen können, englisch steht Tank Shot deutlich besser. Dann lieber zwei Songs der Marke „Some Day”, „Fun” oder „Still Missing”. Schöner melodischer Female fronted Punkrock mit tollen Melodien und vielen Ooooohs und Aaaaahs.” (Crazy United)
“In Hanover, the signs of the times are more strongly on punk rock again, because not only the Abstürzende Brieftauben were creatively in the flow, but also Tank Shot, who have definitely recommended themselves recently with their debut album “First Strike”. In the meantime, Tank Shot can even point to worldwide distribution/publishing of this two-album set, which is available in Europe, the USA and Asia. In this country, the inclined vinyl hunter & collector can get the chic sky-blue vinyl (limited to 500 pieces) or the handy CD digipack (limited to 300 pieces). The LP version with 13 tracks differs from the CD version with 15 tracks (2 of them are bonus tracks). In Asia, the album is apparently even released with different cover artwork, while in this country a kind of “knife game” adorns the cover artwork, on the Asian version you can see the image of the fictional “Psycho Man”. And that brings us to the album itself, which kicks off with “Return To Pain” (track 1) and immediately puts you in the mood, because it rocks the punk in a nice, relaxed way. In terms of sound, they have found a good balance in terms of the mix, which doesn’t sound too sterile/smooth, but (mostly) still has a bit of rust and dirt. The best conditions to let “Psycho Man” (track 2) off the chain. Personally, I like the nicely old-school touch that forms a kind of core in the sound despite the fluid melody drive. Singer Kirsten’s voice comes across clearly, so that you can easily hear the lyrics. If necessary, you can also study them more intensively in the booklet. Similar to the last album, the Tank Shot sound lives mainly from the variety, which sometimes seems rather clear – “Fun” (track 3). What is described in “Fun” is what is generally known as “flying on your face and getting up again”, but if you are open-minded enough, you can read the lyrics more intensively, so that a certain depth can unfold, which is even more intense in “Shelter” (track 4; play tip I). Although the tempo is a little slower, it brings more focus/space to an immensely important theme. In the last few years I’ve rarely heard songs about homelessness, so it’s all the nicer that Tank Shot have taken on this topic. Chapeau! Gift” (Track 5; Anspieltip II; CD-BONUSTRACK) is almost New Wave at the beginning and also zigzags in a kind of Progressive Punk Rock in between. I could even make out small Nirvana-like parts. However, I would completely rule out the possibility that Tank Shot are cribbing stylistically, especially as the band members have had various previous experiences in other bands, which goes back to the ’80s, the time when Nirvana were just starting out (which was the case in 1987). Things get even more experimental with “Too Much Tequila” (track 6; CD-BONUSTRACK). Ska elements meet New Wave Rock, where for once you don’t suspect too much punk as a background here when you listen to the piece on its own. This changes again with “Still Missing” (track 7) and again brings midtempo (punk) rock, which strangely reminds me of The Cranberries. Why of all things The Cranberries come to mind, I can’t really say. But the fact is that “Still Missing” works both loosely in the background and consciously listened to. As you can easily guess from the title, it’s about losses that burn for life. Things get a bit more punk rock thanks to “Exceptional” (track 8). Here the guitar work stands out a bit more (again), but remains loyal to Tank Shot’s core sound. Up to now, Tank Shot have been more of a pop punk style, especially since there are always light-footed melodies that easily catch the ear, no matter how emotional the lyrics are about life and the various trains of thought – “Waiting” (track 9). It’s good that “Alibi” (track 10; tip for track III) picks up the tempo and prevents you from getting too bogged down by the speed. Drummer Björn definitely had more work to do during the recording, which was audibly worth it, because the song has noticeably more pressure. Tank Shot have also taken this pressure to “Rollercoaster” (track 11), where the sound is a bit more roughness, despite the still “normal” vocals of singer Kirsten. This track (for me personally) also has a bit more variety (towards the end), which brings out Tank Shot’s potential more. It’s almost a bit of a wing-light cliché that with “Prost” (track 12; play tip IV) there’s also a kind of party/drinking song in the luggage, if you disregard the Hangover bonus piece “Too Much Tequila”. But the quality of this song is definitely in the upper league and in times (which are not always easy) like these it is the almost perfect soundtrack for various reunions with dear friends. With Tungsten Tips in mind, the piece unfolds into a kind of audible sunrise/mood lifter in these rainy days. From the felt sunrise, the Michael Kiwanuka cover piece “Cold Little Heart” (track 13; play tip V), which originally appeared in 2.016, moves into an atmospheric felt-nostalgic long-distance reverie. The original track already casts an emotional spell, but the fact that Tank Shot have been able to create their own version, which is clearly more upbeat than the original, puts them on a par with the original in terms of quality. It’s not easy to settle into the abrupt mood-breaker “Some Day” (track 14), despite the punk rock uptempo coming around the corner. However, “Happiness” (track 15) shows that Irish folk elements are also incorporated in a pleasantly subtle and subtle way. At 4:27 minutes, this track is by far the longest on the album and perhaps feels a bit lengthy due to its “unusual” length. All in all, it’s a really good pop punk rock record that is not only impressive thanks to the experience of Gregor Hennig (Die Sterne, Stoppok, Bela B., Grausame Töchter, Philip Boa And The Voodoocult, Oomph! among others) and his fine feeling for a balanced sound, but also has Alla from the ’80s cult punk band Stosstrupp as a guest on the mic. But you’ll find out for yourself which song. So get off your arse and order the record.” (Schafe Schüsse)
“In Hannover stehen die Zeitzeichen wieder stärker auf Punk Rock, denn nicht nur die Abstürzenden Brieftauben waren kreativ im Flow, sondern auch Tank Shot, die sich zuletzt mit ihrem Debütalbum “First Strike” auf jeden Fall empfohlen haben. Mittlerweile können Tank Shot sogar auf weltweiten Vertrieb/Verlag des hier vorliegenden Zweitalbums verweisen, das sowohl in Europa, in den USA, sowie in Asien erhältlich ist. Hierzulande kann sich der/die geneigte Vinyljäger/-in & Sammler/-in die in schicken himmelblau gehaltene Vinyl (übrigens auf 500 Stk. limitiert) oder eben das handliche CD Digipack (limitiert auf 300 Stik.) sichern. Dabei unterscheidet sich die LP Version mit 13 Stücken von der 15 Stücke (2 davon sind Bonustracks) umfassenden CD Version. In Asien erscheint das Album offenbar sogar mit anderem Coverartwork, während hierzulande eine Art “Messerspiel” das Coverartwork ziert, sieht man auf der Asien-Version das Abbild des fiktiven “Psycho Man”. Und damit auch schon zum Album selbst, das mit “Return To Pain” (Track 1) durchstartet und direkt Laune macht, weil es schön locker den Punk anrockt. Vom Sound her hat man eine gute Balance in Sachen (Ab-)Mischung gefunden, die nicht zu steril/zu glatt klingt, sondern (meist) noch etwas Rost und Dreck mitfahren lässt. Die besten Voraussetzungen den “Psycho Man” (Track 2) von der Kette zu lassen. Mir persönlich gefällt die schön Old School-ige Note, die trotz des flüssigen Melody-Drives eine Art Kern im Sound bildet. Die Stimme von Sängerin Kirsten kommt klar rüber, so dass man die Lyrics bequem raushören kann. Ggf. kann man diese auch im Booklet intensiver studieren. Ähnlich wie beim letzten Album, lebt der Tank Shot Sound vor allem von der Abwechslung, die teils eher übersichtlich erscheint – “Fun” (Track 3). Was in “Fun” umschrieben wird, ist das, was man allgemeinhin als “auf die Fresse fliegen und wieder aufstehen” kennt, dennoch kann man sich ggf., sofern man offen genug ist, intensiver in die Lyrics reinlesen, so dass sich ein gewisser Tiefgang entfalten kann, was bei “Shelter” (Track 4; Anspieltip I) noch mal eine Stufe intensiver ausfällt. Zwar geht es tempomäßig etwas runter vom Gaspedal, bringt dafür aber einer immens wichtigen Thematik mehr Fokus/Raum mit. Ich habe in den letzten Jahren extrem selten Songs über Obdachlosigkeit gehört, umso schöner, dass Tank Shot sich dieser Thematik angenommen haben. Chapeau! Fast schon New Wave Nähe bringt “Gift” (Track 5; Anspieltip II; CD-BONUSTRACK) zu Beginn mit und springt auch in einer Art Progressive Punk Rock zwischendurch im Zickzack. Selbst kleine Nirvana-nahe Parts konnte ich ausmachen. Dass Tank Shot hierbei stilistisch abkupfern, würde ich jedoch komplett ausschließen, zumal die Bandmembers diverse Vorerfahrungen in anderen Bands gemacht haben, was bis in die ’80er Jahre zurückreicht, also der Zeit als Nirvana gerade erst starteten (was 1987 der Fall war). Noch experimenteller wird es bei “Too Much Tequila” (Track 6; CD-BONUSTRACK). Ska Elemente treffen auf New Wave Rock, bei dem man hier ausnahmsweise nicht allzu viel Punk als Background vermutet, wenn man das Stück für sich hört. Das ändert sich mit “Still Missing” (Track 7) wieder und bringt erneut Midtempo zugeneigten (Punk) Rock mit, der mich seltsamerweise irgendwie an The Cranberries erinnert. Warum mir ausgerechnet The Cranberries in den Sinn kommen, kann ich gar nicht genau sagen. Fakt ist aber, dass “Still Missing” sowohl locker im Hintergrund, wie auch bewusst gehört funktioniert. Wie unschwer schon angesichts des Titels zu erahnen, geht es hierbei um Verluste, die auf Lebenszeit nachbrennen. Etwas Punk Rock-iger wird es wieder dank “Exceptional” (Track 8). Hier sticht die Gitarrenarbeit auch (wieder) etwas mehr hervor, bleibt insgesamt aber loyal im Kernsound von Tank Shot. Bislang fahren Tank Shot größtenteils eher den Pop Punk Style, zumal es immer wieder mit leichtfüßigen Melodiebögen zugeht, die locker ins Ohr gehen, egal wie emotional die Lyrics auch vom Leben und von den diversen Gedankenläufen erzählen – “Waiting” (Track 9). Gut, dass “Alibi” (Track 10; Anspieltip III) deutlich das Tempo anzieht und verhindert, dass man sich von der Geschwindigkeit her zu fest einfährt. Drummer Björn hatte hier auf jeden Fall mehr zutun beim Einspielen, was sich hörbar nachvollziehbar gelohnt hat, denn das Stück bringt spürbar mehr Druck mit. Diesen Druck haben Tank Shot auch zu “Rollercoaster” (Track 11) mitgenommen, bei dem es auch vom Sound her mit etwas mehr Roughness zugeht, trotz des nach wie vor “normalen” Gesangs von Sängerin Kirsten. Bei diesem Stück ge-fällt (mir persönlich) auch etwas mehr Abwechslung (nach hinten raus) auf, was das Potenzial von Tank Shot mehr zur Geltung bringt. Es hat was fast etwas von flügelleichter Klischeebedienung, dass mit “Prost” (Track 12; Anspieltip IV) auch eine Art Feier-/Saufsong mit im Gepäck ist, wenn man vom Hangover-Bonus-Stück “Too Much Tequila” absieht. Dafür ist die Qualität dieses Stückes aber definitiv in der Oberliga angesiedelt und gibt in Zeiten (die nicht immer einfach sind) wie diesen den nahezu perfekten Soundtrack für diverse Wiedersehen mit liebgewordenen Freunden her. Mit Tungsten Tips im Hinterkopf, entfaltet sich das Stück zu einer Art audiblen Sonnenaufgang/Stimmungsaufheller in diesen verregneten Tagen. Vom gefühlten Sonnenaufgang geht es mit dem Michael Kiwanuka Coverstück “Cold Little Heart” (Track 13; Anspieltip V), das original 2.016 erschien, in eine atmosphärisch gefühlt-nostaligisch anmutende Fernträumerei. Schon das Originalstück zieht in emotionalen Bann, doch dass Tank Shot mit ihrer Version ein ganz eigenes Stück erschaffen konnten/haben, das deutlich beschwingter als das Original ist, bringt sie qualitativ auf Augenhöhe mit dem Original. Da fällt es nicht ganz leicht sich im abrupt gefühlten Stimmungsbreaker “Some Day” (Track 14) einzufinden, trotz dessen, dass hier Punk Rock Uptempo ums Eck kommt. Dass man aber auch Irish Folk Elemente auf angenehm subtil-dezente Weise mit einzustricken weiß, lässt “Happiness” (Track 15) in direkter Folge offen raus. Dieses Stück ist mit 4:27 Minuten das mit Abstand längste auf dem Album und fühlt sich vielleicht der “ungewohnten” Länge wegen etwas langatmig an. Insgesamt eine echt gute Pop Punk Rock Platte, die nicht nur dank der Erfahrung von Gregor Hennig (u. a. Die Sterne, Stoppok, Bela B., Grausame Töchter, Philip Boa And The Voodoocult, Oomph!) und des Feingespürs für’s ausgewogene Klangbild, etwas hermacht, sondern mit Alla von der ’80er Kult-Punkband Stosstrupp auch einen Gast am Mikro mit am Start hat. Hanover as a city under the sign of punk/punk rock has already produced a lot, just think of the “Chaostage” and its loving founder spirit Karl Nagel or the “Abstürzende Brieftauben”. Strange that concerning the younger punk generation only the band Abfluss comes to my mind in connection with Hannover. But no matter how the punk status actually stands in Hannover, these days there will be reinforcements in punk rock from this region again. Tank Shot, consisting of already experienced musicians, existing only since 2016, send their debut album as inevitably as a tank on the street(s). Members played in bands like Annex5, Y-Fronts, Recharge, Testosteron, Audio Kollaps, Sanitys Dawn, Guts’N’ Glory, Kybernetix, Melones. But the past lies in the back of the band members and bonus points are not awarded in the hard race. Nevertheless, one can have respect for the works of the individual musician, who with a somewhat over one-mid “intro” (track 1) send out beautifully rough, punchy sound in advance, in order to change seamlessly with “Two Minutes” (track 2) into melodic, but sympathetically not too eel-smooth punk rock and to celebrate parties directly catchy in the ear. If you were in mid-tempo tracks on “Two Minutes”, “Run Away” (Track 3; Tip I) takes you to the next gear. Singer Kirsten’s voice seems as familiar as it is ear-friendly. Personally, her voice color strongly reminds me of Debby Earle of Tungsten Tips.
Little Sex Pistols cross-references dance on the strings, while “TV Zombie” (Track 4) runs and reminds of a legendary Sex Pistols TV interview that once made the English famous. Such bridges of thoughts and tributes only make Tank Shot more likeable, which with “Fridays” (Track 5) also offer a potential hymn for the weekends. Lyrically, even those who only had English at school will understand what it’s all about. Tank Shot keep the lyrics so far simple, but effective song writing.
Unfortunately, “Rising Star” (Track 6) tends to slow things down, although the album could still use a little more speed. As if Tank Shot had heard this thought, “B.S.” (Track 7; Tip II) where my thought became quieter and the music louder again. In terms of content, Tank Shot also offers a remarkable shovel bonus that is very appealing. With “Broken Heart” (Track 8; Tip III) the song follows, which picked me up directly thanks to the YouTube video clip and took me away. Even though Tank Shot are more melodic in mid tempo and stick to their basic recipe. Above all, it is thanks to the really rich production that a lot of pressure (e.g. from the drums) runs along, which makes the listening experience pleasantly rounder. Cheap” (Track 9) also remains on a high level of quality, but Damocles threatens the music, which is perceived as relatively constant in tempo (also over several album runs; subjectively). Variety is urgently needed, what with “Mess” (Track 10; Tip IV) Exploited influences (take “Troops Of Tomorrow” as a flash of inspiration) can get through and Tank Shot stands out!
The only German song “Der letzte Weg” (Track 11; Tip V) sets the next higher trick (in a positive sense) and has something of Dark Punk as you know it from “Fliehende Stürme”, for example, to which an atmospheric mixture of Tamara Danz (R.i.F.) and “Ideal” is at least added. “Go To Hell” (track 12) is much more influenced by hard rock, which mainly brings guitar work into the focus, despite the driving overall performance as a band. Strangely enough, this album becomes much more mature/balanced, i.e. more interesting – “Time To Move On” (Track 13). This kind of variation in the music food is missing more often in “First Strike”, especially in the first half of the album. Maybe the “Less Is More” principle could have scored more points overall? Not that we get each other wrong, the album is well above the average in terms of craftsmanship and can easily go through without zapping on, on the other hand, despite the pleasant sound, which can also be heard in “Silence” (track 14) and “Drunk Tank” (track 15), there are a few lame moments when listening. 7,25/10 (Schafe Schüsse)
Hannover hat als Stadt im Zeichen des Punk/Punk Rock ja schon so einiges hervorgebracht, man denke nur mal an die “Chaostage” und dessen liebevollen Begründergeist Karl Nagel oder auch an die Abstürzenden Brieftauben. Seltsam, dass mir bzgl. der jüngeren Punk Generation nur die Band Abfluss im Zusammenhang mit Hannover einfällt. Doch wie auch immer der Punkstatus aktuell tatsächlich in Hannover steht, in diesen Tagen kommt wieder Verstärkung in Sachen Punk Rock aus dieser Region. Tank Shot, die aus bereits erfahrenen Muckern- und erst seit 2.016 bestehen, schicken ihr Debütalbum so unausweichlich wie einen Panzer auf die Strasse(n).
In Sachen ehemaliger Wirkungsstätten fallen Namen wie Annex5, Y-Fronts, Recharge, Testosteron, Audio Kollaps, Sanitys Dawn, Guts’N’ Glory, Kybernetix, Melones. Doch die Vergangenheit liegt im Rücken der Bandmembers und Bonuspunkte werden im harten Rennen nun mal nicht vergeben. Man darf dennoch Respekt vor den Werken der einzelnen Mucker haben, die mit einem etwas über einmitigem “Intro” (Track 1) schön ruppigen, druckvollen Sound vorausschicken, um mit “Two Minutes” (Track 2) nahtlos in melodischen-, jedoch sympathischerweise nicht zu aalglatten Punk Rock überzugehen und direkt eingängig im Ohr Feste zu feiern. War man bei “Two Minutes” eher in Midtempospuren, fährt man mit “Run Away” (Track 3; Anspieltip I) das Tempo im nächsten Gang vor. Sängerin Kirstens Stimme kommt so vertraut wie ohrenfreundlich vor. Mich persönlich erinnert ihre Stimmfarbe stark an Debby Earle von Tungsten Tips.
Kleine Sex Pistols Querverweise tanzen auf den Saiten mit, während “TV Zombie” (Track 4) läuft und an einen legendäres Sex Pistols TV Interview erinnert, das die Engländer einst bekannt machte. Solche Art Gedankenbrücken und Tribute machen Tank Shot nur noch sympathischer, die mit “Fridays” (Track 5) auch eine potentielle Einläuthymne für die Wochenenden anbieten. Textlich wird auch der-/diejenige, der/die Englisch nur in der Schule hatte, verstehen können um was es geht. Tank Shot halten die Lyrics bislang einfach, aber songdienlich effektiv.
Leider wirkt “Rising Star” (Track 6) gegen bisher Gehörtes eher ausbremsend, obwohl das Album noch etwas Tempozulage vertragen könnte. Als hätten Tank Shot diesen Gedanken gehört, setzt “B.S.” (Track 7; Anspieltip II) da an, wo mein Gedanke leiser und die Mucker wieder lauter wurde. Auch inhaltlich bieten Tank Shot eine bemerkenswerte Schippenzulage an, die zu gefallen weiß. Mit “Broken Heart” (Track 8; Anspieltip III) folgt das Stück, das mich dank YouTube Videoclip direkt abholte und mitnahm. Wenngleich Tank Shot auch hier eher im Midtempo melodiös ihre Bahnen ziehen und damit bei ihrem Grundrezept bleiben. Vor allem der wirklich satten Produktion ist es zu verdanken, dass ordentlich Druck (z. B. vom Schlagzeug her) mitläuft, was das Hörerlebnis angenehm runder macht. Zwar bleibt auch “Cheap” (Track 9) qualitativ auf dem hohen Level, jedoch droht das Damokles über der Mucke, die vom Tempo her relativ gleichbleibend (auch über mehrere Albumdurchläufe; subjektiv) empfunden wird. Da tut Abwechslung dringend not, was mit “Mess” (Track 10; Anspieltip IV) Exploited Einflüsse (man nehme “Troops Of Tomorrow” als Gedankenblitz) durchkommen lässt und Tank Shot ausgezeichnet steht!
Der einziger deutschsprachige Song “Der letzte Weg” (Track 11; Anspieltip V) setzt den nächsthöheren Stich (in positivem Sinne) und hat etwas von Dark Punk wie man ihn von Fliehende Stürme z. B. kennt, dem sich ein atmosphärisches Gemisch aus Tamara Danz (R.i.F.) und Ideal bei-/untermischt, zumindest gefühlt. Deutlich Hard Rock beeinflusster geht es zu “Go To Hell” (Track 12) über, der vor allem die Gitarrenarbeit in den Fkous rückt, trotz der drivigen Gesamtleistung als Band. Seltsamerweise wird dieses Album gerade jetzt auf den letzten Metern deutlich ausgereifter/ausgewogener, sprich interessanter – “Time To Move On” (Track 13). Diese Art Abwechlsung/Variation im Muckefutter fehlt “First Strike” vor allem in der ersten Albumhälfte öfter mal. Vielleicht hätte das “Less Is More” Prinzip insgesamt mehr Punkte holen können? Nicht, dass wir uns falsch verstehen, das Album ist handwerklich deutlich über dem Durschnitt und kann locker durchlaufen, ohne dass man weiterzappt, andererseits hat man trotz des angenehmen Sounds, der sich auch bei “Silence” (Track 14) und “Drunk Tank” (Track 15) zu behaupten weiß, ein paar lahmere Momente beim Hören. 7,25/10 (Schafe Schüsse)
After two years of existence of the band, First Strike is released on Lake Town Records and contains 15 female fronted punkrock to streetpunk songs of the old school. Characteristic is the catchiness of the songs! Well-placed choirs and classical, not exaggerated punk riffs let the album go into your ears as if by itself. Midtempo punk rock songs alternate with forward going street punk songs. A ballad here and there makes the whole thing round. Sometimes I would have liked it to be a bit crisper here and there, which is why the music doesn’t come across as oppressive on the one hand and on the other hand loses a bit of liveliness. Nevertheless a good debut overall, which reminds of classics of the scene! The good piece is available on white splatter vinyl (500 pcs + download code) and in a crisp CD digipack with an extensive 16-page booklet. 3/5 (Away from Life)
Mit First Strike liefern die Altpunks von Tank Shot aus Hannover ihr Debütalbum ab! Nach zweijährigem Bestehen der Band erscheint First Strike auf Lake Town Records und beinhaltet 15 female fronted Punkrock- bis Streetpunk-Songs der alten Schule. Bezeichnend ist die Eingängigkeit der Songs! Gut plazierte Chöre und klassische, nicht übertriebene Punk-Riffs lassen das Album wie von selbst ins Ohr gehen. Es wechseln sich Midtempo-Punkrocksongs mit nach vorn gehenden Streetpunksongs ab. Hier und da eine Ballade machen das Ganze zu einer runden Sache. Manchmal hätte ich es mir hier und da etwas knackiger gewünscht, weswegen die Musik einerseits nicht ganz so drückend rüberkommt und andererseits etwas an Spritzigkeit verliert. Nichtsdestotrotz ein insgesamt guter Einstand, der an Klassiker der Szene erinnert! Das gute Stück gibt es auf weißem Splatter-Vinyl (500 Stk. + Downloadcode) und im knackigen CD-Digipack mit einem ausgiebigen, 16-seitigem Booklet. 3/5 (Away from Life)
With their debut album “First Strike”, Tank Shot are offering 14 punk rock hits with female vocals and a brilliant intro. The opening song “Two Minutes” already has a lot of charme. A nice mid-tempo song where you are tempted to sing along loud and clear during the chorus. The following songs are also all well produced, groovy old school punk rock, all with melody and catchy choruses, which are casually milled into your ear canals and get stuck there. No wonder – because all band members should be well known in the Hanover scene. Kirsten, Holm, OC, Björn and Baumi have played in various bands since the 80s and do what they love. 14 Punk Rock Kracher mit weiblichem Gesang und ein schickes Intro hauen uns Tank Shot mit ihrem Debüt Album “First Strike” um die Ohren. Schon der Opener “Two Minutes” kann begeistern. Ein schöner Mid-Tempo Rocker, bei dem man beim Refrain gleich in Versuchung kommt, lauthals mitzusingen. Die folgenden Songs sind durchweg gut produzierte, groovige Old School Punk Rocker, alle mit Melodie und catchy Refrains, die sich lässig in Eure Gehörgänge fräsen und dort hängenbleiben. Kein Wunder – denn alle Bandmitglieder sollten bestens in der Hannover Szene bekannt sein. Kirsten, Holm, OC, Björn und Baumi haben seit den 80ern in diversen Bands gespielt und schielen hier nicht nach den neuesten Trends, sondern machen das, was sie lieben. Schönen straighten Punk Rock. Promising, diversified debut of a five-piece from Hannover with some not quite new musicians, some of whom already played their first musical merits in various bands in the eighties. The wheel is therefore not reinvented, they rely on proven, but musically convincing formula and with the right punk rock attitude. 15 songs of old school style are offered. Punkrock, which doesn’t deny the RAMONES, the good old English 77er Punk and Oi! streetpunk and also sometimes evades in the direction of Deutschpunk and Hardrock. Female vocals, highly melodic, with a good edge, mostly in the midtempo segment on the road, powerfully recorded and cleanly produced. You can tell from the album that the band is passionate and has a lot of fun. The lyrics serve some clichés and are not necessarily Pulizer price-suspicious, but this can not reduce the overall impression. The band should release more songs in German, the only German track of the album, “Der letzte Weg”, is one of the highlights and reminds of early hits of NICHTS. (Ox)
Vielversprechendes, abwechslungsreiches Debüt eines Fünfers aus Hannover mit einigen nicht mehr ganz taufrischen Haudegen, die sich teilweise bereits in den Achtzigern in diversen Bands erste musikalische Meriten erspielt haben. Das Rad wird deshalb auch nicht neu erfunden, man setzt auf Bewährtes, dies aber musikalisch überzeugend und mit der richtigen Punkrock-Attitüde. Geboten werden 15 Songs der alten Schule. Punkrock, der die RAMONES, den guten alten englischen 77er Punk und Oi!-Streetpunk nicht verleugnet und auch mal in Richtung Deutschpunk und Hardrock ausweicht. Female Vocals, hoch melodisch, mit ordentlich Kante, zumeist im Midtempo-Segment unterwegs, druckvoll aufgenommen und sauber produziert. Dem Album merkt man an, dass die Band mit Herzblut und Spaß bei der Sache ist. Die Txte bedienen zwar einige Klischees und sind nicht unbedingt Pulizer-Preis-verdächtig, dies kann den Gesamteindruck aber nicht mindern. Demnächst darf die Band ruhig mehr Songs auf Deutsch bringen, der einzige deutschsprachige Track des Albums, “Der letzte Weg”, zählt zu den Höhepunkten und erinnert durchaus an früher Hits von NICHTS. If you look at the pictures, there are no newcomers this is about. I think the group is German but they sing in English. Certainly, one can easily say it and say that they sound something like any other group. You can hear Vice Squad, but you can also hear some other quieter punk, but you can hear that this is a group that is really good and a group that can play their instruments. I really like the pace of their music and Kirsten is singing really well. I love groups who play punk and have a female singer so Tank Shot has won a score for me before I put on the disc. But what they win on think I is their good melodies and that they do not let the music go too fast and not too hard. You can hear the lyrics well and you just want to sing along with them. Fridays is almost like a Misfits song of the highest grade and they should have cred for that. One of my favorite songs on the record! (Skrutt Mag Sweden)

Genres are sometimes difficult to define. Even if it seems incredibly simple in this case. Punk. Maybe it’s that simple. Punk. But we know that this scene places a lot of value on differentiation, they like to take that exactly. So what? Oi? Horror? Skate? Crust? Screamo? Punk rock? A little bit of everything, that´s what the band says. Personally, I don’t think it’s that wild and would call “First Strike” a very homogeneous album, because there’s a sweep across all punk genres, but the singer’s voice keeps everything perfect, dirty, casual and extremely charming together. Aber wir wissen ja, dass diese Szene zeimlich viel Wert auf Differenzierung legt, die nehmen das da schon gern genau. Also was? Oi? Horror? Skate? Crust? Screamo? Punkrock? Ein bisschen alles, so sagt es die Band. Ich persönlich finde das nicht so wild und würde »First Strike« durchaus als sehr homogenes Album bezeichnen, weil da zwar ein Rundumschlag quer durch alle Punksparten passiert, aber die Stimme der Sängerin alles perfekt, verschmutzt, lässig und extrem charmant zusammen hält.
